Richard Scoyler, a pioneer in cancer research, was remembered for his "truly remarkable life" at a state memorial service held at the Sydney Opera House. Scoyler, a former Australian of the Year recipient, passed away at the age of 59 after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Thousands of mourners gathered at the iconic venue to pay their respects and celebrate his legacy as a world leader in melanoma and brain cancer treatment. Among the cherished mementos displayed during the service were his bike and park run shirt, symbolizing his love for cycling and running. Other items included his AO medal, his joint Australian of the Year award, and a microscope, all paying homage to his groundbreaking contributions to melanoma science. Governor-General Sam Mostyn, NSW Premier Chris Minns, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese were among the dignitaries who delivered heartfelt tributes. Prime Minister Albanese described Scoyler as a "national treasure" who lived a "truly remarkable life." He emphasized Scoyler's courage, curiosity, generosity, and kindness, highlighting his impact on the Australian story. Scoyler's best friend of 40 years, Jim Finlay, shared his memories of a loyal and fun-loving friend, while leading melanoma surgeon and researcher John Thompson celebrated Scoyler's remarkable achievements and bravery in undergoing a world-first treatment during his battle with brain cancer. Thompson praised Scoyler's determination and awareness of the science involved, describing him as one of his closest friends. The memorial service featured live performances by Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett and Kate Miller-Heidke, who sang "The Last Day on Earth" accompanied by piano. Scoyler's wife, Katie Nicholl, delivered an emotional speech, reflecting on their 24 years together and crediting Scoyler as an amazing father and a kind, adventurous soul. His three children, Matthew, Emily, and Lucy, shared cherished memories of an inspiring and hands-on dad who taught them everything they know. To conclude the service, a clip was played of Scoyler and his family reflecting on his cancer journey and their life together. Scoyler's decision to publicly document his radical treatment contributed to cancer research, making him the first to apply an approach used in melanoma-based cancer treatment to his brain cancer. His risky treatment extended his life for years, allowing him to complete 200 park runs and the Tasmanian leg of the 1,400-kilometre Tour de Cure bike ride. This memorial service not only celebrated Scoyler's life and achievements but also highlighted his profound impact on cancer research and his ability to inspire and connect with people from all walks of life.
